Traditionally one of the first activities offered to a child new to a Montessori setting. This set contains everything needed to prepare the first two Montessori pouring activities: “Pouring Beans” and “Pouring Water”.

In the first activity children are first shown how to correctly hold, handle and place small glass jugs before learning how to pour beans from one sturdy glass jug to another. Children can easily see the beans and how many are left. Beans also make a nice noise when they are poured accurately, but clatter loudly onto the little tray if they are spilt. This multi-sensory ‘control of error’, combined with having to pick up spilt beans, helps children learn that they have to pour carefully and precisely. Once children are proficient at this activity, replace the beans with water and show them how to mop up any spills (by now hopefully few & far between) with the little sponge. Children can use these new skills at snack time to pour their own water or juice – a very proud and empowering moment!

As is traditional in Montessori settings we use small but sturdy glass jugs – children can easily see the contents and also learn that things break if they don’t look after them properly. If you would rather use non-breakable jugs, we stock little stainless steel creamers which would make an excellent alternative.
